Examples? Uh, sure... I guess...
Mirage
The area that the shard is in will be warped and appear to have a 'ripple' in that space. It's sort of like looking at a mirage in an area that couldn't possibly have one. I was thinking along the lines of just a mirage-like image, but there could be more with this one. For example, it could mess with the sense of direction and distance of people, so they get lost within the area, while people outside of the field of influence are unaffected.
Different Dimension
Like in A2, I was thinking of something like Sun/Moon stones that sent the hero and the team to some other area where they had to fight monsters. Like, maybe there has to be a seal for it first, and a group of monsters and a guardian they need to beat. The different dimension could be the world where the Akashic Record was created and one character, who can be chosen at random, can actually be related with it. This could add on to the story plot, where maybe creatures from the Akashic realm start to show up and people start to collect shards to stop them or something. Or, like, the chosen person will have dream sequences, which ultimately lead them to become a villain or something, where they see that the apocalypse was caused by something that they couldn't believe.
Fear Field
This is similar to the first two, except this one is most effective against the person who steps into its field of influence. For example, if the person is afraid of spiders, then the field will suddenly be swarmed by gigantic and tiny spiders that the heroes will have to defeat in order to reach the shard, which might be protected by a Spider Queen or something. Another example could be if somebody was afraid of water. The field could suddenly be surrounded by a box which is slowly filling up with water. There are jellyfish and shark monsters in the water and the heroes have to beat those to retrieve the shard. This can lead to some character development or something. If somebody is afraid of something like what other people think of them, then 'people' will appear or something. If someone is afraid of fear/death itself, then maybe zombies or a super demon appears.
Boss-Monsters
For this one, I was thinking along the lines of Demons or something. When they are weak, they are unintelligent. On the other hand, when they become stronger, their intelligence also increases. I think their power should be based upon the number of Shards that are left. They grow stronger as more and more shards are collected, sort of like what happened in 'The One.' Their shards could be hidden within themselves and can only be retrieved in two ways. The first way is to defeat the monster and just take it out. The second way is to have the monster take it out itself and hand it over. Boss-Monsters can be a lot of things and do a lot of things. People can actually role-play these guys, I think, later on, if the role-play is successful. Or, perhaps, these monsters are citizens of the Akashic Realm, all who were chosen without their knowing in joining a super-secret-universal war that nobody knows about.
